Course Description:
Students will study the social, cultural, and technological changes that occurred in Europe, Africa, and Asia from the Roman Empire through the Age of Exploration and how these civilizations are connected. Students will analyze historical themes and how they are connected to present day. Students will develop literacy skills outlined by the Common Core State Standards, including analyzing primary and secondary sources, argumentative and narrative writing, research, source citation, technology use (Chromebooks and Google Apps for Education) and collaboration.
7th Grade Content Standards: Students in grade seven study the social, cultural, and technological changes that occurred in Europe, Africa, and Asia in the years A.D. 500-1700s. After reviewing the ancient world and the ways in which archaeologists and historians uncover the past, students study the history and geography of great civilizations that were developing concurrently throughout the world during medieval and early modern times. They examine the growing economic interaction among civilizations as well as the exchange of ideas, beliefs, technologies, and commodities. ~From the California History Social Science Standards
Common Core Literacy and Technology Standards: In addition to the content standards, emphasis will be placed on the new Common Core Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies to develop academic and technological skills that will be essential for success in 8th grade, high school and beyond. These skills include, but are not limited to, close readings and analysis of primary and secondary sources and texts, discipline-specific written composition skills, critical discussions, and the use of Chromebooks and Google Apps for Education (GAFE).
Classroom Expectations: I strongly believe in solid work habits, using class time wisely, and student participation during all classroom activities. These behaviors will help them earn a high grade in the class and will support their development as learners in general. The three classroom rules are 1. Do not stop me from teaching, 2. Do not stop others from learning, 3. Come prepared to class to learn. Failure to follow rules will result in verbal warnings, change of seats, time out, parent communication, and if the situation remains unresolved, a referral to Dr. Gold.
